Brugge, Belgium
Last weekend we made our way to Belgium. We are just checking countries off our list one weekend at a time. We went on another ITT trip. This trip was just a day trip. We left at 2:30 in the morning traveled for about 6 hours. 2 hours to the Ferry, about and hour and a half on the ferry to France, then another 2 hours until we pulled into Brugge around 10 a.m. or so. We stopped at a chocolate factory right when we got into Belgium and bought some delicious chocolates.
Brugge was my kind of city. It’s full of chocolate, lace, and waffles. When we got there the frist thing we did was hit up a waffle house. Can we just take a moment to talk about the waffles? They were to die for! I had always heard of Belgium waffles but I honestly don’t think I ever understood exactly what the big deal was. When I think of waffles I think of “Lego my Ego” waffles . They’re good but they aren’t anything to throw a party over. I will seriously throw a party if I get to have another waffle that was as good as the one I had in Belgium. Imagine the best waffle you have ever had and then times it by 20 and that MIGHT give you an understanding of how good these waffles were. The actual waffle seemed as if it had sugar sprinkled on top. I could have eaten the waffle without any toppings and been just as happy. It was delicious!
The rest of the day we strolled through the city going in and out of different lace shops. I made a couple purchases for myself and then once I realized that I was going crazy over the lace I decided I should buy more for friends back home. The pieces are so pretty. I spent most of my day with Kassidy, Evan, Jessica and Tom. They were a fun group. We walked up and down the streets of Brugge taking pictures and eating French fries. Brugge is one of the few cities that was left untouched after two world wars. The city looks much as it did at the height of its trading days. In Oklahoma when a home has been standing for over 100 years we think that building is old. Here the building date back to 600 years ago! Isn’t that hard to grasp. We went on a boat ride through the city and I couldn’t stop thinking of the people who built the buildings 600 years ago! Did they even have blue prints back then? Ha! How did they do it without power tools?! Just amazing.
We were told that Brugge was the home to 2011’s Worlds Best Beer but you can’t find it anywhere. If you want it you have to get your name on a waiting list and you can only buy 6 beers at a time. We were thinking there would be all sorts of bars there to try all the different kinds of beer but they were actually hard to come by. We stopped by the famous Wall of Beer and snapped a picture but I was more interested in paying 30 pense to get into the bathroom so I could see the fishbowl sink! Ha!
All in all Brugge was a success. It was a nice relaxing day. We didn’t have anything on our schedule we were just dropped off and wandered through the city. It was so nice.
We got back at 2:30 in the morning. I knew I was exhausted but I didn’t realize I was as tired as I was until I didn’t wake up until 4:30 the next day! Like what? My mom would have said “sister, your body must have needed it.” That it did! I have no shame about it either. Let’s just say Sunday was wonderful. I plan on posted an entry explaining a typical day here at Feltwell but for now I need to pack for Scotland. Kassidy and I leave tomorrow. We are a little/a lot nervous because we are inexperienced travelers (this is the first trip we have actually had to plan ourselves) and we booked our flight to leave at 17:00 which is 5:00p.m. We still don’t know exactly why we did that because the airport is an hour away from Lankenheath and we don’t get out of school until 3:00pm. Most people have been saying there is no way we are going to make it because they close the gates 30 minutes before the flight and others say we will make it for sure but we will just have to be in a super big hurry. So if everyone could say a little prayer and keep their fingers crossed for us that would be great. We have no choice…we HAVE to make it.
Pictures to come. My iPhoto crashed but I did some research and got it fixed. I will post them after Scotland!
Cheers!
